Plus Size Fashion Faux Pas

Whether you a curvy plus size or are as skinny as a rake, it’s easy to make fashion faux-pas. Here’s some good ‘looking good’ advice for everyone, that’s particularly important if you wear plus sizes.

  1. Think confident – yes, we know it’s a cliché, but if you don’t feel good on the inside you won’t look good on the outside. So our number one rule is to love your body, feel proud and strut your stuff. Never forget that boys love plenty of plus size curves!

  2. Invest in a good bra – you’ve seen the statistics about the huge percentage of women that are walking around in the wrong bra size, but even so it’s sometimes hard to admit that those figures include you! A good bra truly makes the difference to almost every outfit that you are going to wear – and that is even more the case when you wear plus sizes. So, find a day and time when you’re not in a rush and the stores aren’t packed and take yourself along to the lingerie department of any good department store. They have professionals there that can measure you accurately and let you know the right size and style of bra to really set off your clothes. Try on a few different styles of bra while you are there and then put on some outfits over the top so you can see the difference that a good bra makes. And remember, once you know your size you don’t have to buy from that store – there are plenty of online sources for plus size bras such as www.freshpair.com which has bras up to size 56FF.

  3. Make sure that your clothes fit – it sounds obvious, I know, but so many people make the mistake of wearing clothes that are just not their size. Sometimes in an effort to hide some plus size curves people wear clothes that are way too loose (I don’t have to mention the word “tent” for you to know what I am saying…) or sometimes for fear of trying on a dreaded larger size we end up wearing things that, let’s face it, are more than a little too tight. We’ve all seen people that have poured themselves into a tight top that should have been retired two dress sizes ago. And, admit it, you know what it feels like to wear a too-tight skirt that makes you feel like you’re being cut in half when you try to sit down. You’re not fooling anyone but yourself with your tricks, so take a deep breath, grab a tape measure and work out what size you really are. And then, enjoy hitting the shops!

  4. Be honest with yourself – take a good look in the mirror when you try on your clothes. There are so many stylish and flattering plus size dresses available these days there is no reason not to look and feel great.  Just because you find something that is available in your size does not mean that you should buy it. If you don’t look fabulous, save your money.

  5. Dress appropriately for the occasion – we know that you can rock a plus size halter dress, but no matter how sensational you look, you should never wear one to the office. After all, the boys do need to be able to get some work done.
Remember your age –This does not mean that you need to go shopping for mumus as soon as you turn 40, but it does mean to think about whether the short skirt that worked great at 16 is really such a good idea at 60. Likewise, if you are young, don’t even think about dressing like a grandma! There are so many fashionable, age appropriate plus size clothing stores around these days there’s no excuse!
